Lower Morrison and Lower Wedgewood Creeks Flood Mitigation Opportunities Study

The study aims to assess riverine flood risks for Lower Morrison Creek and Lower Wedgewood Creek and recommend solutions to reduce risks.

About the study

As part of the town’s efforts to improve resiliency to climate change, more than 40 flood-sensitive sites in the 2008 Flood Prioritization Study (pdf). The report contains details on each flood sensitive area, mapping, and high-level options for mitigation.

The Lower Morrison and Lower Wedgewood Creeks Study Flood Mitigation Opportunities Study is a follow up to the 2008 study and includes a detailed assessment of riverine flood risk and recommended works to reduce these risks, in accordance with the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA), Schedule B, process.

Riverine flooding is caused when creeks overflow their banks and spill into adjacent low-lying areas during heavy rainfall events.

Study area

The study area is south of the Morrison-Wedgewood Creek Diversion (MWD) channel. It has been historically cut off from its upper reaches by construction of the MWD channel in the 1960s. The MWD channel is not included within the study area scope. The study area includes both the properties along the creeks and the North Service Road/Invicta Drive drainage area.

Provide feedback to the Ministry of Environment

Members of the public may request the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to impose additional conditions or require a more thorough study (such as an individual/comprehensive EA approval) only if it would prevent, mitigate, or address adverse impacts on constitutionally protected Aboriginal and treaty rights. Requests based on other concerns will not be considered.

The request should be sent in writing or by email to the following contacts and town staff in copy. Be sure to include your name, contact details, the type of order requested, and how it addresses potential adverse impacts, along with any supporting information, to facilitate the ministry's review.
