Automated Speed Enforcement Tickets

Everything you need to know about automated speed enforcement (ASE) tickets, which are called penalty orders.

ASE tickets are mailed (through Canada Post) to the registered owner of the vehicle. Please note that tickets are not issued by email or text messaging. The ticket includes the fine amount, the location of the violation, and a photo of the offence.

The owner is liable to pay the tickets regardless of who was driving the vehicle. ASE tickets do not result in demerit points or affect your driving record.

Vehicle owners have several options to pay tickets, including online payment, and payment by mail.

ASE ticket basics

Recipient and vehicle information:

  • Name and Address: Identifies the registered owner of the vehicle, not the driver of the vehicle at the time of the offence.
  • Licence Plate Number: The Ontario licence plate associated with the offence.

Offence details:

  • Violation: Indicates the specific contravention, such as exceeding the speed limit under Section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Date and Time of the offence: When the offence occurred, for example, February 20, 2025, at 8:12 a.m.
  • Location: Where the violation took place, for instance, Pine Glen Road. Eastbound West of Oakhaven Drive, a designated community safety zone in Oakville.
  • Recorded Speed: The vehicle's speed at the time of the offence compared to the posted limit, for example, 53 km/h in a 40 km/h zone.

Officer certification:

  •  A statement from the issuing Provincial Offences Officer certifying the details of the contravention, including their signature and officer number.

Important dates:

  • Date of Issue: When the Penalty Order was issued, for example, March 4, 2025.
  • Date of Deemed Service: The date the notice is considered served, typically seven days after issuance, for example, March 11, 2025.

Penalty order number:

  • A unique identifier for your case, for example, 2025-322-52-Q5061939-007.

Administrative penalty amount payable

  • The amount of penalty that is to be paid.

Payment information:

  • Online Payment: Payments can be made via the Town of Oakville's website using a credit card. You'll need the Penalty Order Number and your licence plate number.
  • Other Payment Methods: Details on mailing a cheque or using the drop box at Town Hall are provided. Ensure cheques are payable to the Town of Oakville and include the Penalty Order Number.

Dispute/Appeal process:

  • Requesting an Appeal: You have up to 30 days from the Date of Deemed Service to request an appeal.
  • How to Appeal: Appeals are conducted electronically unless accommodation is required. To initiate, visit the Town of Oakville's website, locate your Penalty Order, and select "Dispute/Appeal."

Consequences of non-payment:

  • Late Fees: Failure to pay within 30 days of the Date of Deemed Service may result in a late payment fee being added.
  • Plate Denial: Unpaid penalties will be referred to the Ministry of Transportation, which can prevent the renewal of your vehicle’s licence plate. Payments must be made directly to the Ministry of Transportation, and additional fees may apply.

An ASE ticket includes a set fine determined by the Chief Judge of the Ontario Court of Justice

The fine is based on the vehicle’s rate of speed over the posted speed limit at the time the image was taken.

The ticket amount includes:

  • The set fine
  • Applicable court costs
  • A victim fine surcharge, credited to the provincial Victims’ Justice Fund

The penalties are coordinated through a provincial Joint Processing Center (JPC), which is a common platform that collects data from all ASE cameras across all municipalities, and Provincial Offence Officers issue ASE tickets.

ASE tickets can be paid online, by phone or by mail.
