Automated Speed Enforcement Tickets

Everything you need to know about automated speed enforcement (ASE) tickets, which are called penalty orders.

ASE tickets are mailed (through Canada Post) to the registered owner of the vehicle. Please note that tickets are not issued by email or text messaging. The ticket includes the fine amount, the location of the violation, and a photo of the offence.

The owner is liable to pay the tickets regardless of who was driving the vehicle. ASE tickets do not result in demerit points or affect your driving record.

Vehicle owners have several options to pay tickets, including online payment, and payment by mail.

ASE ticket basics

An ASE ticket includes a set fine determined by the Chief Judge of the Ontario Court of Justice

The fine is based on the vehicle’s rate of speed over the posted speed limit at the time the image was taken.

The ticket amount includes:

  • The set fine
  • Applicable court costs
  • A victim fine surcharge, credited to the provincial Victims’ Justice Fund

The penalties are coordinated through a provincial Joint Processing Center (JPC), which is a common platform that collects data from all ASE cameras across all municipalities, and Provincial Offence Officers issue ASE tickets.

ASE tickets can be paid online, by phone or by mail.

Tickets are issued based on verified evidence of speeding violation, including a picture taken by the ASE camera. The program’s intent is to ensure strict compliance with the posted speed limit.

You can request a review of your ticket if you believe there is an error. The appeal process is detailed on the Dispute a Ticket page.

We strongly encourage all drivers to adhere to posted speed limits to avoid penalties and help create safer neighbourhoods.

Screening/hearing responses

Responses are sent to the email you provide when requesting an appeal.

If you haven’t received a response to your screening or hearing request, please check your junk or spam email folder or verify your request status online on the Parking and Enforcement Self-Service page.

If you don’t pay or properly begin a dispute option within 30 days of ticket deemed served, the unpaid penalty and fees will be sent to the Ministry of Transportation for collection.

You will be required to pay all outstanding penalties and fees to renew your vehicle plate permit.

You may also face additional fees.
