Road resurfacing projects
Road resurfacing projects take about three to five weeks to complete and are typically done in six separate phases.
Localized repairs to both curbs and sidewalks are also included as part of this program.
Phases of construction
The contractor completes all necessary concrete curb and sidewalk repairs.
- Repairs are completed to address drainage issues, tripping hazards and improve accessibility.
- Curb and sidewalks are not repaired due to aesthetic issues such as minor cracking.
- Excavations will be backfilled shortly after concrete repairs are completed in preparation for sod placement later in the year.
Duration: Three to eight days dependent on the number of repairs and weather constraints.
The contractor removes the existing asphalt.
- Depending on the existing thickness, asphalt will be partially removed or may be fully removed.
- If the asphalt is fully removed, new granular material will be placed on the roadway and graded.
- This operation will typically occur approximately one week after the concrete works are completed.
Duration: One to two days depending on the existing asphalt thickness and size and length of the roadway.
The contractor will place the first new layer of asphalt. There are typically two new layers required.
- Asphalt is typically placed between one and five days after the removal depending on whether granular grading is required. This can vary depending on weather conditions.
Duration: One to three days depending on the length of the roadway and weather conditions.
The contractor will adjust the maintenance holes within the roadway to the final grade.
- Maintenance holes are typically lowered during construction to help improve accessibility to the site and help the flow of traffic during construction.
- Once the first layer of asphalt has been placed, the maintenance holes are adjusted to the final grade in preparation for the final layer of asphalt.
Duration: Typically occurs five to seven days after the first layer of asphalt has been placed. The adjustments will take approximately one to three days to complete depending on the number of maintenance holes present.
The contractor will place the final new layer of asphalt pavement. This phase is the last phase in the construction work.
Duration: Typically occurs approximately three to five days after the maintenance holes have been adjusted.
The final lift of asphalt will take approximately one to three days to complete depending on the length of the roadway and weather conditions.
Sod restorations are typically completed in September-October when the temperature and weather conditions are more favorable for sod placement.
The contractor will remove weeds and re-grade the areas prior to sod placement.
Construction on your street
Advance notice of planned work
If your street requires work, you will receive a letter from us within two weeks of construction.
You can also expect to receive a door-hanger 48 hours before the crew arrives, asking you to prepare.
Prepare for planned work
Help us keep construction on schedule by:
- Moving any part of your sprinkler system off the town’s property. The contractor will not be responsible for damage to sprinkler systems located on town property, whether it’s marked or not.
- Not parking on the street during the day while construction is underway.
- Relocating your vehicle if access to your driveway is closed.
- A door-hanger will be left with those residents or businesses that require additional work in front of their property that may restrict access to their driveway, e.g. curb reconstruction, etc. We will advise them where they can park overnight during this time.
Parking during construction
- You can park in your driveway.
- We ask that you do not park on the street during the day while construction work in underway.
- If we find we need to do extra work in front of your property that may restrict access to their driveway, e.g. curb reconstruction, we will leave a notification with you that describes the work involved and a number to call to find out where you can park overnight while this work in underway.
