Purpose statement
This procedure defines the eligibility criteria and the terms and conditions for Public Holidays compensation.
Scope
This procedure applies to full-time employees of The Corporation of the Town of Oakville (Town). Employees covered by collective agreements are subject to the terms and conditions of their respective collective agreement.
Procedure
- Full-time employees who work all of their regularly scheduled days of work before and after a Public Holiday, unless they can show reasonable cause for failing to work, shall be paid for the following days in accordance with the Employment Standards Act, 2000 provisions for Public Holiday pay:
- New Years Day;
- Family Day;
- Good Friday;
- Victoria Day;
- Canada Day;
- Labour Day;
- Thanksgiving Day;
- Christmas;
- Boxing Day
The town also recognizes the following designated holidays for full-time employees: - Easter Monday
- Civic Holiday
- Full-time employees who have completed the probationary period will be entitled to one floater day in lieu of Remembrance Day which shall be recognized each year as a designated holiday to be taken at a time mutually agreeable to the employee and Department Head. If an employee is no longer employed by the town, adjustment in respect of the floater day will be made on the same basis that vacation entitlement is calculated.
- Full-time Public Holiday pay will be the equivalent of the number of regular daily scheduled hours at the regular basic straight time salary. Temporary employee Public Holiday pay will be calculated in accordance with the Employment Standards Act, 2000 as amended from time to time.
- An employee who is scheduled to work on a Public Holiday, will be paid Public Holiday pay plus time and one half for the hours worked on the Public Holiday; OR their regular rate for the hours worked, plus one substitute holiday day with pay.
- An employee who is scheduled to work on a Public Holiday and fails to do so without reasonable cause will lose his or her entitlement to Public Holiday pay.
Responsibilities
The Human Resources Department in conjunction with Payroll and Benefits Services of the Financial Operations Department are responsible for the administration of this procedure.
Definitions
Designated Holiday: a holiday designated by the Town of Oakville for its employees.
Public Holiday: a holiday designated by the provincial or federal government.
