Policy statement

The design, construction and operation of municipal roads within the Town of Oakville (the town) shall be in accordance with all applicable Federal, Provincial and Municipal guidelines, adhere to all required legislation and conform to the established procedures.

Purpose

The purpose of the Municipal Roads Policy is to ensure that municipal roads are designed, constructed and operated to a safe and sustainable standard for both vehicular and active transportation modes.

Scope

This policy applies to all public roads under the ownership of the Town of Oakville (including unassumed roads in new development) and, where formal agreements are in place, Region of Halton roads.

Definitions

Active transportation: for the purpose of this policy and related procedures is any form of human-powered transportation – walking, cycling, mobility aids, in-line skating or skateboarding. There are many ways to engage in active transportation, whether it is walking to the bus stop, or cycling to school/work.

Municipal Roads or Municipal Right of Ways: for the purpose of this policy and related procedures means land owned by the town as opened or unopened road allowances, or for the purpose of operating a public highway under the Municipal Act; and where agreements exist, also includes land owned by the Region of Halton as opened road allowances, or for the purpose of operating a public highway under the Municipal Act.
