Creating safer streets: Automated Speed Enforcement begins in Oakville

Wednesday, January 22, 2025

The Town of Oakville’s commitment to road safety takes a significant step forward as Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras are now fully operational in designated areas. The ASE cameras are strategically located in community safety zones where speeding has posed a consistent risk, such as near schools, parks, daycare centres, and senior citizen residences.

Fourteen cameras (two per ward) are now active in the following areas. The locations are also mapped for easy reference in the Automated Speed Enforcement Camera Map:

  1. Colonel Williams Parkway from Stocksbridge Avenue/Richview Boulevard to Watercliffe Court
  2. Rebecca Street from Sussex Street to Bronte Road
  3. Old Abbey Lane between Montrose Abbey Drive and Milton Road/ Northwood Drive
  4. Nottinghill Gate from Runnymead Crescent (easterly intersection) to Beechgrove Crescent
  5. Reynolds Street between Cornwall Road and Sumner Avenue
  6. Kingsway Drive from Wynten Way/ Winterbourne Drive to Prince John Circle/ Sir David Drive
  7. Westoak Trails Boulevard from Brookhaven Crescent/Arbourview Drive to Colbeck Street/ Amberglen Court
  8. Pine Glen Road between Newcastle Crescent (westerly intersection) and Proudfoot Trail
  9. Sixth Line from Elm Drive to Upper Middle Road
  10. River Glen Boulevard from Towne Boulevard to Mowat Avenue
  11. Glenashton Drive from Eighth Line to Grand Boulevard
  12. North Ridge Trail between Glenashton Drive and Postridge Drive
  13. Sixteen Mile Drive from Preserve Drive to Larry Crescent/Isaac Avenue
  14. Post Road from Dundas Street to Threshing Mill Boulevard

If a vehicle exceeds the designated speed limit in an ASE-enforced area, the ASE camera captures an image of the vehicle and its licence plate, which is then reviewed by a provincial offences officer. A ticket is mailed along with a copy of the image to the registered owner of the vehicle within 30 days of the offence. Tickets are issued to the owner of the vehicle regardless of who was driving. More details on the town’s ASE cameras and ticket payment options is available on the Automated Speed Enforcement page.

The ASE cameras will rotate every four months to other locations within the town’s 36 Community Safety Zones. Ninety days before the cameras move to the next set of locations, the town will install “Coming Soon” signs at the upcoming locations, and the list will be posted on oakville.ca.

Background

  • The ASE program is part of a broader effort that includes traffic calming measures, enhanced crosswalks, public education campaigns, and collaboration with schools and community groups to promote safe driving.
  • ASE has been shown to reduce speeding and improve safety in areas where it is implemented. Refer to the Ontario ASE page.

Quote

"Our speed enforcement cameras are placed only in areas where speeding endangers our most vulnerable community members, especially children. These cameras target the few who refuse to slow down and prioritize the safety of our kids and others in our community."
