With the start of seasonal rains, it is critical for Oakville residents to learn how to protect their property from flooding, what to do in case of floods and who to contact for support. To get all these details and more, the Town of Oakville invites the community to attend an open house on Thursday, April 24, 2025, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Road.
The open house will be a drop-in format where members of the public can interact with town staff and representatives from Halton Region, Conservation Halton, Credit Valley Conservation, Insurance Bureau of Canada, and Oakville Ready.
This is an important opportunity to learn about various resources and support available through the town and its partner organizations and have questions answered. Resources and information shared at the open house will include:
- flood prevention and backwater valve installation regional subsidies
- types of flood insurance
- safety tips for before, during and after a flood
- flood alerts notifications
- how to prepare an emergency kit
- driveway ditch and culvert maintenance
- importance of stormwater infrastructure
- community resources available in case of flood-related evacuation, and more.
This initiative is one of many actions the town is taking to address climate change through community preparedness for improved resiliency. Flooding can damage homes, displace residents and put pressure on stormwater infrastructure, so it is important to be aware and address this collectively as a community.
Springtime reminders
- Subscribe to Conservation Halton and Credit Valley Conservation flood alert messages

- Elevate your furnace, water heater and electric panel if you live in flood-prone area
- Install weather protection sealant around basement windows and the base of ground-level doors
- Consider installing a sump pump and zero reverse flow valves in basement floor drains
- If you have ditches and culverts along your driveway, keep them free of debris
- When a flood is likely in your area, move to higher ground and stay away from streams, drainage channels, creeks and other areas known to flood suddenly
- Keep people and pets away from the edges of all bodies of water and do not attempt to drive through flooded roads or fast-moving water
