South Shell Park will close starting September 3, 2024, for approximately four months for shoreline repair work to ensure its long-term protection. The shoreline was flagged as a high priority for repairs due to deterioration of existing shoreline protection following recent high lake level events.
To ensure the public’s safety, the park trail, parking lot and playground will be closed for the duration of the construction work. Alternative parking is available at North Shell Park.
In addition to the shoreline work, an artificial habitat for the bird species, Bank Swallows, will be built at South Shell Park. The habitat will support Bank Swallow colonies that have been found within a two-kilometre radius of the park. The town will create the habitat using man-made materials to replicate the birds’ natural environment.
In collaboration with Conservation Halton, the town will conduct a long-term research study to monitor the artificial habitat’s performance and document the occupancy of Bank Swallows.
As part of the town’s parking lot renewal program, the parking lot at South Shell Park will be resurfaced after the shoreline construction is complete. The parking lot will be closed for one month in spring 2025 for this work.
