Wednesday, May 29, 2024

As June approaches, the town is gearing up to celebrate Bike Month, promoting cycling as an eco-friendly, healthy, fun and efficient mode of transportation. Bike Month offers the opportunity for people to try riding a bike for the first time, learn new skills, or simply enjoy connecting with nature through cycling.

Whether you’re an avid cyclist or just getting started with the basics of biking, check out a few upcoming events in Oakville throughout June.

June 6

  • June 6 marks Bike to Work Day in Oakville and across the GTHA. The town encourages residents to hop on their bikes to cycle to and from work for the day.

June 9

  • The town’s Sustainable Transportation team will be out at the Downtown BIA’s FRESH community market on June 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to share cycling safety tips and more. Decorate your bike and say hello to the team for your chance to win a prize.

June 15

  • Cycling has long been a popular pastime in Oakville, with the Queen’s Hotel advertising itself as the headquarters for “horsemen and bicyclists” back in 1897. Visit the Oakville: Headquarters for Horsemen and Bicyclists display at the Oakville Museum all month long, to view bicycles from the 1800s and be inspired to jump on your own bike. On June 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. town staff will be onsite to share cycling safety tips and information, giveaways and more.
  • Take in the beauty of Oakville while getting familiar with the town’s cycling network! Explore cycle routes developed by the town’s Sustainable Transportation team on your own or together with friends, anytime throughout the day. Get the maps on the Bike Month page. Be sure to stop by Centennial Square between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to visit the bike repair café for giveaways, free snacks and tips on keeping your bike running in good condition. You can also check out Oakville Transit’s small capacity electric bus, equipped with a bike rack for customers.

June 17 and 26

  • Tune into the Safe Cycling 101 webinar hosted by Cycle Toronto on the Bike Month website at 12:30 p.m. Topics will include equipment and bike fitting, safe riding techniques and more.
