Blueprint for success: Navigating construction and renovation projects in Oakville

Monday, May 06, 2024

As spring-time construction begins, Oakville residents considering home improvement projects are advised to check with the town if their project requires a building permit. Whether it's a new deck, kitchen renovation or adding an additional rental unit, it is essential to ensure these projects are both legal and safe.

May is Building Safety Month and the town is encouraging the community to prioritize safety when starting any construction project. Securing a building permit and hiring a licensed, experienced professional helps reduce safety risks, and provides property owners peace of mind that their project meets Ontario’s Building Code standards.

To assist residents in navigating the process, here are some key tips:

  1. Check regulations: Before starting any project, familiarize yourself with the Building Code requirements. Check the Building Permits page for types of projects that require a permit before starting construction.
  2. Prioritize safety: In addition to getting a building permit if the project requires one, be sure to hire licensed professionals for your construction or renovation projects.
  3. Prepare for inspection: At various stages of the project, the property owner will be required to book an inspection by the town. Don’t skip this important step, this is crucial to make sure that the construction meets standards.
