On September 20, 2022, Town Council received an update on the Community Energy Strategy (CES) highlighting the progress made on key projects completed in year two of the strategy’s implementation. Council also endorsed the extension of the town’s service agreement with Future Energy Oakville (FEO) through to March 2023.
In February 2020, Council endorsed the CES, brought forward by the Oakville Energy Task Force (OETF), which was developed in response to the climate emergency declared by the town in 2019. The CES establishes a collective approach for mitigating the impacts of climate change and directly supports the climate emergency declaration. It also showcases the importance of community collaboration to accomplish critical initiatives to support climate action.
Future Energy Oakville’s mandate is to champion and coordinate the community-wide implementation of the CES. The key role of the OETF, comprised of community leaders from local businesses, government, utilities, schools and community groups, is to provide oversight and support to the FEO in fulfilling its mandate.
Along with members of the OETF, the town continues to be a key stakeholder in implementing the CES, with multiple town departments leading significant initiatives that directly support the CES 2020-2025 priority projects. The following highlights some of the town-led initiatives that have been completed to date:
“Council and I are proud of the significant progress made to date on various local innovations to support a cleaner, greener and more livable Oakville. Thanks to the ongoing collaboration between the town, Oakville Energy Task Force, Future Energy Oakville and key stakeholders, the priorities outlined in the Community Energy Strategy will move forward successfully with continued opportunities for community engagement. We are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving community energy efficiency in Oakville.”
