Town increases fines for parking violations around popular parks

Update, September 15, 2021: 

On September 13, 2021, Town Council approved a motion to extend Special Provision Areas near popular parks.

No parking signs and increased fines will remain in place until October 22, 2021 on local roads around Arkendo Park, Bronte Beach, Coronation Park, Lions Valley Park and Tannery Park. Special Provision Areas are implemented near popular parks to help reduce overcrowding, traffic congestion and illegal parking in these areas, which can impact neighbourhood safety and access for emergency vehicles.

Parking permits that were issued to residents in these Special Provision Areas will continue to be required and any permits that have been issued can continue to be used until October 22. From Saturday, May 15 to Thursday, September 15, fines for parking violations will increase to $100 on local roads adjacent to popular waterfront parks at Bronte Beach, Coronation Park and Tannery Park. No Parking signs and increased fines will be implemented to help reduce overcrowding, traffic congestion and illegal parking in these areas which can impact neighbourhood safety and access for emergency service vehicles.

“We want people to enjoy our parks safely and responsibly,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “When parking lots are full, neighbouring streets are impacted and overcrowding can occur. If the park is busy, please try another park in our town or come back at a different time.”

Residents are reminded that during the current Stay-at-Home order, parks and trails remain open for people to walk and cycle through, playgrounds are open and sports fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, skate parks, and baseball diamonds are closed. Outdoor social gatherings are limited to those living in the same household. Residents visiting their neighbourhood park are encouraged to consider walking or cycling.

In 2020, an emergency by-law was enacted to create Special Provision Areas, which allows the town to implement temporary no parking along the streets adjacent to areas where increased traffic flow and parking are impacting local neighbourhoods. The town will be implementing Special Provision Areas on impacted roads near Lions Valley Park in the coming weeks in addition to those at waterfront parks. More areas may be added as needed. 

Parking permits will be provided to residents in Special Provision Areas to accommodate their temporary parking needs.

Other enforcement measures are being considered to ensure parks continue to be available and safe and will be presented to Council at their May 25 meeting.
