This afternoon Mayor Rob Burton and Oakville Town and Regional Councillors Pavan Parmar, Beth Robertson, Tom Adams, Marc Grant, and Jeff Knoll joined the organizers and the hundreds of participants at the Black Lives Matter demonstration before they set off for their march from downtown Oakville.
“The participants demonstrated their passion and support in a respectful and safe manner and we were impressed by the number of people who turned out in support of Black Lives Matter today,” said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton.
The event organizers asked Oakville MP and Minister of Public Services and Procurement Anita Anand to speak to the participants. Minister Anand expressed her support for Black Lives Matter and vowed to continue to fight for equality.
"I am a woman and a person of colour and your elected Member of Parliament," Minister Anand told participants, "and I want you to know that every day of my life I fight and will fight for equal rights and respect for all!"
Minister Anand was cheered and applauded throughout her remarks.
“On behalf of Oakville Town Council I want to thank the young organizers of today’s demonstration who proved that our future is in good hands and I want to encourage them to utilize their freedom of peaceful assembly and to continue to speak out against injustice,” Mayor Burton said.
