Oakville Mayor Rob Burton joined Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward, Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette, Milton Mayor Gord Krantz and Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr in calling for a targeted approach, backed by conclusive data, on specific sectors that are seeing increased infection rates instead of ordering a full closure across Halton Region. A letter written to Premier Doug Ford ahead of his decision of whether or not to send Halton Region back to a modified Stage 2, called for a targeted approach.
“I prefer a measured, targeted approach over a blanket approach that unfairly punishes small businesses in Oakville and Halton,” said Mayor Burton. “We need to target the sources of community spread before shutting down businesses that have not contributed to the spread or caseload.”
This targeted approach has been applied by the Province in keeping schools open and only closing individual schools with multiple infections instead of closing down entire school districts. Halton Region’s Medical Officer of Health responded to the increased infections in sports settings by issuing recommendation that limited team sports in Halton Region.
Premier Ford’s decision is expected on Monday on whether additional COVID-19 restrictions will be imposed on Halton Region and Durham Region.
