Oakville Cemeteries staff provides sensitive, caring service to meet client needs including:

Lots, columbarium niches and scattering rights are available for cremated remains. The columbarium is an above-ground structure with niches that can receive up to two cremated remains, and is adorned with a family memorial.

Scattering Rights may be purchased for the pond and the Memorial Woods section at Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery.

The cemeteries office receives many requests to perform genealogical searches for family members and friends.

Within the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act, staff can search through old cemetery archives to provide as much information as possible to the person making the request.

Depending upon the amount of research involved, there may be a cost incurred.

Other resources

Oakville Cemeteries offer a range of interment services including full burials, cremation burials, cremation niches and cremated remains scatterings.

When a plot is purchased, a portion of the purchase price is dedicated to the Care and Maintenance Trust Fund. The care and maintenance contribution will cover seasonal cutting of grass, levelling of plots and general upkeep of the cemetery grounds to uphold the peaceful appearance of the cemetery.

Bronze flat markers and bronze niche wreaths

Flat bronze markers and bronze niche wreaths can be purchased through the town. Flat bronze markers are mounted on a granite base and are installed flush with the ground. Separate bronze vases and vigil lights are also available for purchase. Please see the Cemetery By-law for direction on the size/type of flat marker allowed on your plot/niche. Installation fees are based on the size of the flat marker.

Upright monuments

Foundations for upright monuments are installed by the town upon a family’s request. Please see the cemetery by-law for direction on foundation sizing based on the number of plots you own. Foundation fees are determined by the size of the foundation.

Granite flat markers

You may purchase a granite flat marker for your flat marker plot from any monument dealer. Please see the Cemetery By-law for size restrictions. The town installs all flat markers. The installation fee will be based on the marker size. Flat markers are installed seasonally based on weather conditions.

Other available memorials

Our Cemeteries team currently uses contracted services from qualified restoration professionals to provide restoration services for monuments and markers within our Pioneer Cemeteries.

Monuments are examined to determine and schedule treatment needs. The main criteria include:

  • if a monument could cause physical harm in its present state (can it be easily fall over and cause injury)
  • if leaving a monument untreated would cause it to deteriorate

The treatment recommendations are based on the findings at the time of the condition assessment and apply the methods for repairing tombstones as outlined in the Ministry of Culture's Landscapes of Memories; A Guide for Conserving Historic Cemeteries.

Since this project began in 2009, the town has restored and recovered hundreds of markers and headstones. Work has been completed in Munn’s, St. Mary’s, Merton, Palermo, Wedgewood, Bronte, and St. Jude’s Cemeteries. Additionally, restoration work has taken place on Historic Memorials at George’s Square and Tannery Park.
