Celebrate June

The Town of Oakville is very proud to support a number of fun and educational public awareness campaigns during the month of June.

Welcome the summer season with a month packed with exciting events, programs and activities!

The Town of Oakville and our community partners invite you to participate in fun and educational events this June that aim to raise awareness and provide opportunities for the community to connect.

Every year, June is recognized as National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month throughout Canada. Parks and Recreation Ontario has declared June Recreation and Parks Month (JRPM). And, since 1984, Seniors Month has celebrated older adults and their contributions across Ontario all month long.

Learn, participate and celebrate with us

The Town of Oakville is situated on Treaty 14 and 22 lands and territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, and the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat and Haudenosaunee. Oakville is currently home to many different First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We acknowledge and thank the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation for being stewards of this territory.

In recognition of National Indigenous History Month, residents are encouraged to:

  • Learn more about Treaty 22, which encompasses the lands at 12 Mile Creek (Bronte Creek) and 16 Mile Creek in Oakville, and Treaty 14 (Head of the Lake Purchase) through 13 permanent educational signs in prominent Oakville locations including Erchless Estate, Sovereign House, and Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre as part of The Debwewin Project.
  • Visit Erchless Estate for a better understanding of past and present Treaty relationships in what is now Oakville. The Debwewin: The Truth Project Exhibition was created in partnership with Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Oakville Community Foundation and the Oakville Museum in collaboration with the Debwewin Advisory Council and Know History.
  • Join Oakville Public Library (OPL) and Archives Canada online on June 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to learn about resources related to First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nation genealogy, how to access collections in person or online, and how to get advice or assistance. Registration is required.

There are many other ways to learn more and mark this important part of our past, present and future:

  • Take a walk along one of the Moccasin Trails and explore the history of the lands from an Indigenous perspective. Follow one trail along Sixteen Mile Creek Inner Valley to Dundas Street West at Lions Valley. Or take the other trail located along Bronte Creek Heritage Trail near Rebecca and Mississaga Streets where you'll find a kiosk featuring a series of 13 plaques containing Indigenous stories, verses and information relating to the land, water and sky, giving visitors a deeper understanding of Indigenous heritage. The content for the information booth and plaques was developed in partnership with the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation and Indigenous community members.
  • Visit Tannery and Waterworks parks to check out the Moccasin Identifier and outdoor classroom gathering circle. There is an interpretive game for children and various moccasins designs permanently sandblasted into the stone and painted, as well as the “Rooted in the Land” history wall, which was created in consultation with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.
  • Take a stroll to the orange crosswalk at the corner of Thomas and Church streets in downtown Oakville to learn more about the treaty lands Oakville resides on and Indigenous culture. This crosswalk honours children of the residential school system while providing an opportunity to reflect on generational impact, trauma and oppression endured by Indigenous peoples in Canada.
  • Visit the Indigenous Culture and Community page.
  • Visit the Oakville Public Library’s Truth and Reconciliation page for book recommendations.

Display or wear a rainbow to show your pride or support any time of year. The rainbow flag is flown at Town Hall during the month of June to recognize and support Pride Month and Oakville’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Visit the Oakville Public Library (OPL) and the Book Bike at Halton Pride Fest on June 1 at Hidden Valley Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Kids 6 and under are FREE, with general admission tickets available for $10 each.

Join us for Pride Trivia hosted by the OPL in partnership with Pflag Halton on Thursday, June 6 at 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Central Branch or Tuesday, June 18 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Glen Abbey Branch.

Make a Pride button during Maker Drop-in hours at the OPL.

You can also walk with pride along one of Oakville's rainbow crosswalks on Lakeshore Road at Navy Street, Bronte Road and Kerr Street! The Kerr Village rainbow crosswalk was recently updated with the progress rainbow flag design.

Communities like Oakville embrace this opportunity to promote the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle. It is also a chance to showcase our great programs and amenities that can be enjoyed as a pathway to individual, community, and environmental well-being.

Get active and join us in ParticipACTION’s Community Challenge as the town vies to be Canada’s most active community! The more Oakville organizations and individuals sign up and participate, the bigger the town’s chance of winning $100,000 to support local sport and physical activity initiatives!

Our Fitness Member Appreciation Week starts June 3! Check out the activity schedule on this page for a list of drop-in programs you can try (some free of charge!) and special events throughout the month.

June is Bike Month

Oakville has over 260 kilometres of on-road bike lanes and off-road cycling paths! Coordinated by Cycle Toronto, Bike Month is celebrated across the GTHA and Guelph from June 1 to 30. Visit the Bike Month website for activities, events and safety webinar details.

Oakville's Heritage Trail system is almost 60 kilometres of mixed-surface pathways accessible to walkers, joggers and cyclists. These trails feature information stations telling over eighty stories about this land and its people, dating from 9000 BC to AD 2000. The trails link all areas of the community and reflect our natural, human and built heritage.

Explore the outdoors

Visit our parks and open space, including our gardens, off-leash dog parks, playgrounds, skateboard parks, splash pads, sports fields, courts and harbours.

Oakville offers more than 1,700 hectares of parkland, more than 260 kilometres of trails and more than 200 parks!

The town has five seniors centres in Oakville that provide older adults with a welcoming, accessible and supportive environment.
